My sister and I have the luxury of both being born in September and 5 days apart. Actually, my brother was also born in September. His birthday is on the 30th so he barely made it. We spent our childhood, my sister, brother and me sharing our birthday celebrations until we got older and had separate days to celebrate but always picked a day in between our birthday to have “family dinner” to celebrate with everyone. Well, the tradition hasn’t stopped for me and my sister. We still try to celebrate our birthday together. Either on her birthday, my birthday or somewhere in between. This year our celebration took us to Miami. We originally planned to go on her birthday but wouldn’t you know the hurricane hit the week prior so we had to reschedule for 2 weeks later (that’s the latest the Southwest Airlines would let us reschedule without charging us). We were still skeptical that we would actually be able to go given the magnitude of damage but Miami pulled through like a champ. We were able to finally get our celebration under way.
We had a blast we stayed at the Hilton Cabana Miami Beach hotel. The hotel is on Collins in a great location. We had a room with a view of the beach, well it wasn’t a full view but enough to sit on the balcony and see water without squinting. The hotel was super adorable and on each floor, it had vintage pictures of families on the beach. The staff was attentive and they text you daily to ensure you are enjoying your stay. I wouldn’t advise the drinks at the hotel, I thought they were a little weak and very pricey. Go down the street to the liquor store or Publix the room has a fridge. Save your money for a great meal, drinks on Ocean Drive, a new cute sarong for the beach or bikini from the stores in Miami Beach. Let’s talk about the food it was delicious. Don’t go for chain restaurants try the local flava. I went off suggestions of the locals and had the immense pleasure of eating at 2 really tasty places, MM69 Sabrosos Latin Bistro and Masa Taqueria both on Collins a short walk from our hotel. The food was delicious. The burritos at Masa Taqueria were the best I ever tasted and the Jamaican Fresca were welcomed on a hot afternoon. We went to Sabrosos Latin Bistro for breakfast and the Mexican omelette and French breakfast we enjoyed was plentiful and divine. We spent our days at the beach or at the pool, shopped in the stores for cute beach wear and sundresses and our nights on the balcony of our rooms before heading to Ocean Drive. Okay, you know you can’t go to Miami without going on Ocean Drive. Wet Willie’s is a must (although found in other places and technically a chain) as sitting in the outdoor area upstairs and people watching while enjoying a drink and conversation is good times.
Our Miami trip was short only a long weekend but just what we needed to refresh from our lives, celebrate our birth and reconnect as sisters and friends. You don’t have to take a week or 2, it would be nice but everyone doesn’t have the time. A short trip away with great company goes a long way. I recommend a Sister Trip or Girls Trip for everyone to reconnect and renew.
